AV Receiver Upgrade: Onkyo TX-NR808

In any home entertainment theatre system the AV receiver is one of the core components, it is like a central hub where all of your audio and video signals are relayed to the other various components. For me, I've never had any qualms splurging a little for this component, as it typically gets the most use between my music listening and movie watching.

After what seems like a decade (in actuality it's a little over 8 years), 5 different city moves, 4 apartments, 1 condo, and X amount of breakups I decided to upgrade from my current Sony STR-DA555ES (still in great working condition)

Sony

to an Onyko TX-NR808 (still sitting in box as I am awaiting news for new Onkyo offerings from CES 2011).

Onkyo

The primary reason for this upgrade isn't due to failure or issues with the receiver, but more-or-less dated technology. With my purchase of the Panasonic TCP54VT25 late last year I need something with more relevant and up-to-date standards (HDMI 1.4a for 3D formats). The build quality of the Sony speaks for itself, and this was primarily one of the reasons why I was so loyal to the brand during its hay day(s). Times change and with innovation the product offering landscape has become very competitive...thus my decision to go w/ Onkyo, plus I wanted to try another vendor for a change, as I tend to be a creature of habit.

Surprisingly the SONY-STR-DA555ES is still fetching upwards of $200 on eBay. Deduct that from the cost I paid for the Onkyo TX-NR808 and my pockets do not feel as light. More to come...
